Marulan battlers turn $30 wager into $1.7 million real estate windfall

Media release - 30th April 2014

  • A luxurious 3-bedroom property, located at 1/100 Hedges Avenue, Mermaid Beach is for sale via private treaty with Raine & Horne Mermaid Beach for $1.7 million
  • The property was secured by the venders with a $30 wager in a recent RSL Art Union draw
  • The property is perfect for retirees, although the RSL Art Union says it could generate annual rental income of $85,800 or peak holiday rates of $5,000 a week

The great Australian Dream is alive and well for a former butcher and his carer wife, who have listed their luxurious Gold Coast villa secured recently with a $30 flutter in a RSL Art Union draw[1].

1/100 Hedges Avenue, Mermaid Beach

The grand 3-bedroom property, located at 1/100 Hedges Avenue, Mermaid Beach, is for sale for $1.7 million, and experienced, leading local agent, Kae Beadman, Principal of Raine & Horne Mermaid Beach has scored the blue chip listing.

“The couple, who prefer to remain anonymous, live at Marulan in the NSW Southern Tablelands, and the husband damaged his back in a work accident in 2004,” says Ms Beadman.

“His wife left the workforce to care for her injured partner and they have battled to make ends meet ever since.”

“Despite the setback, the couple, who enjoyed their first ever plane flight to visit the Mermaid Beach property last month, made a financial commitment to regularly scrape together $30 every six weeks to buy tickets in the RSL Art Union, which supports ex-servicemen and their families.

“The wife made it her job to go to visit the local post office to buy the tickets in every draw and her dedication has helped set the couple up for a more financially secure retirement.”

According to the RSL Art Union, the property, which is spread over 4 spectacular levels and captures amazing views of the Pacific Ocean and the Gold Coast, will potentially generate an annual rental income of $85,800 or peak holiday rental of $5,000 a week.

“However the couple have taken the decision to sell so they can secure a more suitable home in Marulan, with the balance to be invested in other assets,” says Ms Beadman.

“They decided that as country folk, living on the Gold Coast wasn’t for them, and after some careful consideration have decided that they want to buy some acreage in Marulan.

“The couple, who have been married for 25 years, want more room to move after years of living in a conventional house on a regular size block.”

According to Ms Beadman, the opulent home that comes with polished timber floors and luxury finishes throughout is ideal for retirees who do not wish to compromise on style, location and space as the elevator ensures comfort and ease of lifestyle.

“The kitchen is equipped with Miele appliances, has abundant storage and the mirror splashback adds that extra panache,” says Ms Beadman.

“The main bedroom faces the ocean, but the remote controlled blinds allow you to either wake with the morning sun or darken the room for sleep as late as you wish.

From the basement car park with space for 2 cars, there is a private elevator to each level.

A staircase leads up to the huge rooftop terrace with barbecue kitchen and panoramic views over the ocean, the mountains and Gold Coast beaches all the way to Coolangatta, according to Ms Beadman.

“This home has been professionally decorated and furnished and is therefore perfect as a holiday home or as a permanent letting too.”
