'Ocean View' sale proves greatest property show in Coogee

Magnificent ‘Ocean View’, the Coogee residence of the late Philip Wirth, a leading member of the famous Wirth circus dynasty*, has been sold by Raine & Horne Randwick principal Terry Brandtman for $5 million.

The 1693 sqm landmark, built on the corner of Alison Road and Arden Street, was purchased by Irina Filipoppoulos, wife of waste transfer station director William Filipoppoulos. Mrs Filipoppoulos beat several interstate buyers for the prized property.

Occupying one of Coogee’s largest land parcels (1693 sqm), the sprawling heritage-listed home is surrounded by immaculate level gardens, while its beach side position affords panoramic views of the ocean.

Built in 1916, the home - which is in original condition - is a fine example of the elegant grandeur of the Great War era.

Flowing over two vast levels, interiors are encased by wide verandahs that enjoy the northerly sun. Other features include soaring ornate ceilings, fireplaces in virtually every room and secluded gardens, which all contribute to the Coogee property icon’s immense appeal.

Accommodation comprises six huge bedrooms each with ensuite, most of which still feature the original claw foot bath. There is an eat-in kitchen with original stove, two walk-in pantries and a utilities room.

Adjoining the kitchen is a family room, while the enormous formal lounge and separate formal dining room are truly magnificent in size. Additionally, the home has an upper level attic, spacious entrance hall, garages, a cellar and drive-way, which provides multiple off-street parking.

Raine & Horne Chairman Max Raine commended Mr Brandtman for the sale of the famous home.

“This is one of the highest prices ever paid for a Coogee home and it is a testament to Mr Brandtman’s dedication to the Wirth Estate,” Mr Raine said.

“Terry Brandtman has managed Ocean View on behalf of the Wirth family for many decades and it is only fitting that he has been able to secure this record sale for one of Sydney’s most famous entertainment families.”
